OUCTians – Playing a strategic role in AAFSIS (American Association of Food Scientists for the Indian Subcontinent) by 5th August 2014 , Venkat Raman (Chemical 2006-10)

OUCT being one of the few colleges offering Food technology in India had an early head start in absorbing young Indian brains into the field. Many students crossed the seas to pursue Masters in Food technology at the premier institutes in USA. The basics gained at OUCT and exposure at the Master’s level helped them to turn into well equipped professionals contributing at the industry level as well as policy level.inspire (3)

One such involvement of the OUCTians at the policy level was at the American Association of Food Scientists for the Indian Subcontinent (AAFSIS). The purpose of the AAFSIS is to provide and promote a strong and active organization of members with the Institute of Food Technologists (IFT) and other associations and individuals involved in the profession of food science and technology as defined by IFT. ( For more details  AAFSIS has been around since 2001 and Chithra P Panchapakesan (1999 – BTech Food Tech graduate) has been active member in various positions since 2006 and Currently she is serving as the President.

The overall goal is to develop leadership, to acquaint members and others with the areas of activity in food science and technology, and to promote greater interest in the profession. In these lines, AAFSIS organizes many events at inspire (2)different levels to bring professionals together at a platform where they can discuss latest issues in food industry. It also provides exposure to new students by putting them along with seasoned professionals.

In addition, activities have included symposiums at IFT, a student poster contest sponsored by AAFSIS for 1000$ and also in India: we have helped coordinate symposiums at Banaras Hindu University and facilitated IFT President John Ruff’s India visit.
